Era look 40's

So, we all know the Marilyn Monroe look...right?

Once you get a hang of these few simple pointers, this is a look that will never get old!

  • The base of your make-up should be almost exactly the same as your skin tone, 40's make-up was about waxy, flawless bases. Almost doll-like!
  • Eye make-up sounds very simple, but doing gel eye liner flicks can take a while to get the hang of! Simply sweep the jet black gel eye liner across your lash line, leaving a little flick at the end. The idea was to create the look of thicker lashes. Once this is done, brush a light beige colour all over the lid and then define the socket line with a light brown colour. Brush your mascara wand upwards and outwards.
  • The brows should be very defined and arched the compliment the eyes.
  • The lips- Well we all know what colour they are going to be!! Bright vibrant red! Always use a lip liner and colour the lips in before you apply lipstick, this will prevent lipstick from bleeding and fading. Marilyn Monroe's make-up artist Allan "Whitey" Snyder would spend up to an hour on Marilyn's lips alone!
  • What is known as "Cupid's bow" (The "v" shape on the upper lip) was not defined, it was a very smooth curve.
Now all you need is a glam dress and some pretty accessories!!

Bridal Make-up

The beautiful Katherine modeled for my bridal make-up, luckily, she had a gorgeous white graduation dress! The veil I used was from a Halloween outfit I wore a couple of years ago! (Shhhhh!)

So firstly, the before picture....

I started with a Prep and Prime primer by MAC to smooth out katherine's skin, starting from the nose and blending outwards. I then applied MAC face and body foundation (C3 tinted with white face and body). I mainly applied the foundation to Katherine's T-zone, it is nice to leave the cheek bones and U-zone quite product free to leave a dewy glow. I rolled translucent powder on the T-zone (Rolling the powder sets the make-up better, especially on oily skin.)

I then began the eye make-up. I used a beige base all over the lid, a light pink shimmer shadow on the inner corners of the eye lid, blending out. I used a deep purple matte shadow and followed the socket line and blended upward towards the brow bone. I added  deep purple powder eye liner on the upper and lower outer lash line. A little highlighter on he brow brow and lastly, some volumising mascara. I used an angled brush and natural brown eye shadow to fill in Katherine's brows, I just defined the line under the brow.

I used a soft pink powder blush on Katherine's cheek bones, giving her a really fresh look. For her lips I used a deep soft pink lipstick and a shimmery pink gloss, very natural colours, so if the make-up fades throughout the wedding day, it won't be so noticable.

A few tips for Bridal make-up:
  • OBVIOUSLY, use water-proof mascara!
  • Try to avoid glittery, or overly shimmery eye shadows, as they can crease!
  • Primers/foundations with SPF should be avoided, as in photo's they can cause a shine on the skin!
  • If you're using a deep shade of lipstick, make sure the bride has that exact lipstick with her throughout the day!
  • Highlight the areas of the face that stand out, e.g brow bones and cheek bones.
